BMI - Body Mass Index
The BMI is the abbreviation for Body Mass Index. It is the ratio of the lean tissue to fat tissue in your body. It is now considered to be as important as blood pressure and blood cholesterol in assessing ones general state of health. The BMI can be measured by a special instrument. It is important to measure the BMI rather than guess at it from height and weight charts.
The BMI should be between 19 and 25 for a healthy individual. It can be improved by increasing lean body mass through exercise or by reducing fat mass through exercise and calorie reduction. Individuals who lose weight by diet alone often lose more lean body mass than fat mass. For better health, leaner is better than lighter.
